Independent record label ZW Records has signed its first major act. Singer / songwriter Bek Phillips has signed a seven-year deal and will start recording her sophomore album in September 2009. A statement released from the label this morning said: “ZW Records is very excited to have Bek Phillips as part of the ZW family. We are aware that Ms. Phillips had several other options, and we are very excited that she is now part of our team. We have been following Bek’s career over the last two years, and it was time to make a move. With over a million hard-earned plays on her MySpace music page and a solid work ethic, Bek offers much more than just a great voice—Bek writes her own material and has a down-to-earth connection with her fans.”

ZW Records is wasting no time with their star artist—Bek will be traveling to Los Angeles, Chicago, and ending the trip with a stop in Nashville to wrap up writing and recording for her second album, which is due out mid-2010.

Phillips noted: “One of the major benefits of signing with an Indie label was the idea that I wouldn’t be put on the shelf after I was signed. All of ZW’s efforts and marketing is put into my career. I have been following the trends of the music industry over the last three years. The business side has changed, the way we listen to music and the way we buy it. CD sales are down almost 50 percent from last year on an average. The major labels are shuffling to find a way to make existing contracts work; Indie Labels have the flexibility to structure a contract that will not only benefit the label, but the artist as well. The way you measure success as an artist is not by how much you put the label in debt. Running up a tab with a label forces them to either drop you, shelf you, or bring all hands on deck to put your project in motion so they can recoup their investment faster. This isn’t a risk I wanted to take. ZW Records gives me the luxury to be an artist that is always on the front page of their playbook; we are building a family with a foundation of trust.”
